A From above shot of the Marina that I work at Cool Place to be..

Keeping my Kayak down at Teach’s Lair Marina has been a Blessing.  It’s proximity to the Inlet and to the Reef Provides you with a number of options and a number of different species of fish.  To the South is the turbulent waters of Hatteras Inlet, to the North is Rollinson’s Chanel and the Deep water’s of the Reef .. Both will give you what you are looking for if you look in the right places.   With a few days off in the mix, the goal was to hit it hard and hit it well.
Monday Kellie and myself decided to go after the Flounders and the SheepsHeads.  We had some good Intel about them to the South of the Marina, so we set off for them before I had to go to work.  On the way down we drift fished for the Flounder with no luck.  After anchoring up on the the marker I deployed bait for the SheepsHead.    Anyone who has been SheepsHead Fishin know its a lot of Bait and Re-Bait, so ya can go through a lot of bait with little to show for it.    But I did nail a good sized Sea Bass which was a First from the yak.  (Species number 1)

Is there anything to be Concerned about?????

Is there anything to be Concerned about?????

It was about time for me to go to work, so we headed back in the direction of the Marina.  We stopped off at Cora June Island, which is the Giant Dredge Island bout a mile off the Marina.

This Island Does not exist on National Park Land, but is less then a mile from the shore, these birds are not included in bird counts, WHY?

I wanted to go look at the Species of Concern that have kept us off our Beach’s for the last 3 months, and take a few photo’s if they were home.

They are everywhere too many to count, is that the problem, Work, if there not there we don't have to count them.. Fire the whole lot of them...

Ya see if ya don’t know where to look for something, you will never find it, hence it does not exist.

As you can see there are lots of Species of Concern that live on this spoil island one mile off National Park Service Land.. Too bad that if any bird count takes place, these birds do not count.  Pretty Stupid huh?? So if ya just don’t look where they are you will never find them, and you can be real concerned about them though.. But never count them.  Pictures don’t lie.   But the SELC, AUDOBON, DOW and NPS and FWS do and quite frequently I might add.

Tuesday was solo mission day, I loaded up on Sand Fleas over by the Frisco Pier and headed to the Marina.   Paddled out about 3.25 miles and set anchor on a Marker decided to SheepsHead fish and Trout Fish @ the same time.  After a while of Bait Fishing with nothing to show for it this fuglyguy decided to pay me a visit.

This guy reminded me of Stewey from the Family Guy...

Never caught one of these on the Yak before either Spiny Puffer Fish (Species Number 2) Also Managed a Few Grey Trout (species number 3) and a Few Taylor Blues (species number 4)   Before Paddling back to the Marina, pretty full of myself for catching 4 different kinds of fish in 2 days.

Coast Guard Dudes Rule, they keep us safe on the waters... Hatteras Inlet is No Joke and these guys do it on a daily basis.. Glad to call some of them Friends...It's a nice feeling inside when ya see these guys out there on Patrol, they always stop by and say HI... Thanks Guys... You Rule.

Wed, Kellie had some time before work so we decided to hit the Grey Trout Hole that I have Marked as a WayPoint called GREY DEATH.

Ya see not only do we have Species of Concern with wings, some Pencil Pushin Geek with statistics will lead you to believe that there are no more Grey Trout around either.

Try lip-ing him fresh water guys, you will do that just once...

Or as they call it, they are over-fished.. I say BS if you know where to look and when to look for them you will find them.. me and Kellie have found Hundreds of them this past couple of weeks ..

Real Nice Keeper Grey on Fish Bites Xtreme Shrimp

I guess because they (NCDMF) can’t find them or catch any of them that it is their conclusion, that they don’t exist.. It is my conclusion that THEY CAN’T FISH.. Just another INEPT layer of Government that needs not to exist, that we pay for on a daily basis.

If you Like the Gulp Products do yourself a favor and try FishBites Xtreme Shrimps we Now have them @ the Roost in the Marina.

Look another fish that does not exist in their minds,  man I have caught hundreds of them but they in their in-finite wisdom have put a one a day limit on Grey Trout,  just this year.   Same as with the Birds if ya don’t look for them where they are your can claim that they must not exist.

I feel sorry if I ever catch a unicorn out there I’ll let you all know how it tastes.

Rounded out the day with a Croaker or  “Bitch Fish” as Rob likes to call them (species number 5) and a Lizard Fish (Species number 6) and my good friend the Sea Robin   (species number 7)

All in all a Great Few Days on the water with lots of Species of Concern both caught and seen.. I believe the people that a running the show would rather we just go away.. So they can collect their FAT Gov’t PayChecks for doing nothing for it..

You could give these folks a Mirror and a FlashLight and they still could not find their own ASSES in the Dark..

Until Nex Time JAM out

It was a beautiful day on the water

It was a beautiful day on the water

Which I find is the best way to learn something new.  Been planning for 2 weeks now to go  SheepsHead Fishing, I have seen a few come into the Roost and I was curious, and wanted to give it a shot.  So after Talking it over with Both Commercial Fishermen and Sport Fishermen that keep their boats at the Marina, I decided on a tactic and a rig that I would make to give it my best shot.

The tactic is hit as many Channel Markers as you can till ya find them, if nothing is there, move on to the next.  They love structure and the channel markers provide them with lots of it.  So the first thing ya need is Bait.  I decided to use Sand Fleas, so I grabbed my Sand Flea rake and hit the Frisco Pier Beach right after the sun came up..

Sand Fleas are also known as Mole Crabs

It was not long before I had a bucket of Sand Fleas, check on the Fleas, Mission is a go.

Locked and Loaded

Locked and Loaded

Next I rigged up the Yak for the Adventure, I was bringing an extra Rod and I was bringing a Bucket o Fleas.  SheepsHeads require more then a Trout Rod as it more of a bottom fishing thing, so I grabbed my trusty Ugly Stick Tiger Lite, which is capable of throwing up to 3 or 4 ounces and a bunch of SandFleas.

Now it was time to hit the markers, hit the first one I saw out of the Marina and had a couple of hits, but I did not know what to expect as I have never targeted these fish before.  After a little while at the Mark I decided to move off to a deeper one..

The Fishermen told me to load the hook with Fleas, and thats just what I did.

Got out tot he deeper Chanel marker and baited up with several Sand Fleas all piled up on a VMC 8/0 Stainless Offset J-Hook.  Is was not long before I had a taker, I set up strong on then fish and the Tiger Lite bowed up big time .. Drag was screaming on my Stradic 5000 loaded with Dawai 30 pound Samurai Braid.  All I can say is these suckers fight, lots of head shake and pull-age.

16 Incher 15 Points in the War..

16 Incher 15 Points in the War..

Got the Fish to the net and aboard the Kayak, now I had to figure out how to handle the sucka.  He has Spines all over him, and if he stuck ya, lets just say it would not be good.  Got a quick measurement, and I was stoked, 16 inches a scoring fish in Kayak Wars, not only a scoring fish but it would be my 5 species and earn me a Kayak Wars Gold Point.

Had nothing to keep him in so I released him to fight another day.  Re-rigged my set-up and made another cast towards the pile ling, as soon as it hit the bottom, rod goes down and drag starts screaming, this ones a little bigger..

18 incher. this sucka pulled hard.. 15 more points and a new fish I can target

18 incher. this sucka pulled hard.. 15 more points and a new fish I can target

Got the net at the ready and bam, a 18 incher, 15 more points for the Wars.  What a day.. What all the fellas told me was correct, and I am a good listener, got the job done on the First outing..

These fish are amazing fighters and just another possibility, for your sound-side Kayak Adventure ..
