Nice ledges and structure to fish in the inlet..

Nice ledges and structure to fish in the inlet..

With the warmer weather coming to pay us a visit, Sunday looked GREAT to launch the yaks, but there was one problem backed up with work.. But as any good Hatterasman will tell ya, “why do today what you can put off till tomorrow” With that said I called Rob “The General” to see if he had all ready left.  Ya see I tried to be responsible, and go earn some cash, so I told him about an hour earlier that I could not go… Well the call of the water became too much and by 9:00 am I had re-scheduled all my jobs for the day .  All I could do was hope that he had not left yet.  Made the frantic call, Rob answered and he said he was still at home, told him it’s on… Picked me up 15 minutes later and we headed to the Inlet.

We had re-coned it a few days ago and saw some things that we really liked and wanted to hit in better/different conditions.  We got suited up, Rob in Rain Gear and shorts, me in my 4/3 wetsuit, and we proceeded to hit spots we liked from the other day.  Rob was closer to the Ferry Channel working the rips and I was about a half mile from him working the inside ledge, closer to shore.  It did not take long before my rod bowed over and the Drag System of my Daiwa TD SOL was being put to the test.. As I fought the fish I started hootin for Rob to come my  way and photo the fish for KAYAK WARS  http://extremecoast.com/KW10/index.php A year long Fishing Tourney that we started a five man team to fish.. We are Militia Team One in the North East division.   So I got his attention, and he headed my way took the photo, and I measured the Drum @ 27.5 inches, over the slot and the fish was released to be caught another day.

With 10 points on the board for the team that would put us in a 3 way tie for 1st place, as the comp just got started and the water temps have been to cold to hold fish.

The general set up 60 yards to the SE of me and proceeded to cast his Jig, from the Stand up position.  Bout 45 minutes after workin the spot wam, an nice one hits his Salt Water Assassin. He popped his release clip on his anchor and the fight was on.  I popped my anchor release and followed, taking photo’s of the stand up battle.  This Pup pulled Rob for over 200 yards before giving up the Battle.

Make that 20 Points on the Board

Hatteras Inlet RECON

It don't need a caption, it says it all...

It don't need a caption, it says it all...

It has been a nice few days here on da Island, temps approaching 70 and the water temp is in the high 40’s.   With conditions like that, and water on all sides of ya, there only one thing a man can do. Launch the Yak and Go Fishing.  Myself and the General left out of Buxton around noon and headed to Teach’s Lair Marina  The History of the area just knocks me off my feet sometimes.  All the Black Beard Stories just abound in my head when I Paddle around down there, its hard for it not too.  After all Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island were his playground, and its neat just to think that, now its mine.

The General Trying to scatch up a few fish, and a Few Points For Militia Team One in KAYAK WARS a tourney we got into.

Had good reports from reliable folks that the drum were stacked up in the Coast Guard Basin so thats where we headed.  Throwin Berkley Gulps here and there to try and coax a Red Fish out  of his Lair, but there were no takers.  We headed to a grass Island in the Inlet and hit casted all around it with no luck.

Next was Cora June Island one of the Dredge Islands in the Pamlico Sound.  Chased all the birds off the Island because thats what I feel they are doing to me on Hatteras.  Once that was completed casted around in some real pretty water but there were no takers.

While standing there on the Dredge Island, I looked over to the General and Said “People would KILL to be doing this Right now”  “We Are Blessed”  Even though not one fish was landed, or seen for that matter, you have to sit back sometimes and count you blessings, and give thanks to the Man upstairs..

Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to live here, even though there is a ton of Crap going with access issues, there is no place in the world I would rather live… and Play….

The Beast

The Beast

Enough was enough already and the warmer weather was on the way.  Took a few days to fire the Beast back up, and made sure things were running all right, she ain’t much to look @ but she will still climb a tree.  With that taken care of a way to get the Yak to the water was complete.

Next were a new set of heavy-duty leashes for all the stuff I carry in the Cockpit, pliers, fish lipper, GPS and the Fishing Rod.   The Leash’s that you can purchase just do not cut it.  I have been trying different companies for over 8 years now with nothing but failure in product.  It’s not the manufactures fault, it’s what they design for and what I do, just are not the same thing.  They design for you, maybe knocking your rod or pliers into you fresh water lake and you pull your stuff in fast.

Where I go, that is not the case, The Grave Yard Of The Atlantic, is just that, and it deserves as much respect as you can muster, cause if you don’t pay her respect, she will Bitch Slap you in a heartbeat.

Brass and Stainless are the only way to go, the white cord is a normal hand set phone cord

Brass and Stainless are the only way to go, the white cord is a normal hand set phone cord

Over the years I have donated many an Item to Dave Jones Locker, short list goes 5 rods and reels, 5 hats, 5 pairs of prescription sunglasses, numerous lures, several anchors, several milk crates, and that’s just the short list.  Mind you, 80 percent of what I do now is sound side, but if there’s a good Spanish Bite on, or a 10-mile drift trip is planed, or Gulf Stream Mother ship Trip is on, I’m there.

The Ocean takes a lot of stuff away from ya; I don’t bring the same gear I bring sound side, Ocean-side.  Ocean trip gear consists of the cheapest stuff you can find; 20-dollar reel and a 20-dollar rod go a long way in the ocean.  Where as my 500-dollar custom trout combo will never see anything else but sound-side action.

When I first received my First Wilderness Systems Tarpon 120, we got 3, myself ZinPow and Adam.  It was on, we launched on the south side of the point and learned self-rescue, with that under our belts is was off to the north side of the point and the bigger waves.  We provided much entertainment at the very first shark fest, getting crushed by chest to head hi-waves.  Finally one of our seats fell back and we learned that in the coffin position we could take off on bigger waves.  That’s also where we learned that you leg makes a great rudder.  I came down the face of a monster wave, right in front of all the Shark Fest Fellas, I was getting a little skittish of the way the wave ride was going, so I started to exit my Kayak out the port side of the boat on a left hand wave, when my leg enterered the water the boat cut the line of the wave like a surf board.. Mind you I was bailing the Yak when I learned this, when I got to the beach everyone was sooooooo impressed, I was not as I told Sea Bear the story about how I didn’t ride the wave it had ME I was out of dodge, just could not bail..

Cockpit all leashed up

Back to my main point leash’s that will take abuse, bout 10 years ago good friend of mine who is no longer with us (Russ Britt aka Suburban) showed me a set of gear leash’s that he had designed out of stainless and brass and simple phone cord.  They were tough and if you knew Russ, you knew he went big, period dot.

So after years of gear loss, contemplation, here they are the Suburban Gear Leash’s. I bet these will last..Put together 4 of them the other day and I am pleased.  Will have to see if they withstand the test of time and Diamond Shoals.

Went to go test out the new gear on the 10thof March, water temp was 43 degrees air temp was around 50 or so. In my new wetsuit and booties, I jumped into the Beast and we headed to the launch point..

toastie and secure, no more waders for me in the YAK the wet suit is sooo comfortable.

After my three mile paddle myself and my baby doll Kellie went on a 2 mile beach walk looking for sea glass and shells.  We found a bunch of Glass and some real cool shells, which she is all ready making jewerly out of as we speak.  But the best find of the day was my new leg, check it out… ARGGGGGGGGHHHH..

Any of you Pirates lost a peg leg? If so I found it and will trade it back to you for some GROG.....
