A Hatteras Christmas Story

Monday, December 28th, 2009

20091218_08With much anticipation the day finally arrived for Kellie and I to pick up Joe (her son from OHIO).  Unfortunately the weather on the 18 of Dec. did not look good for us, winds were due to come up out of the NE and they were gonna blow hard..  Joe’s flight was due in @ 6:30p.m.  and I figured that we would get back in time before HWY12 was flooded.. Well that is, “IF” the flight was on time.. The weather system that dumped up to 2 feet of snow just forming in the Gulf of Mexico, delaying and canceling flight’s up and down the East Coast

Turned out his flight was delayed 2:45 minutes, his new time in would be 8:45 p.m. So we just hunkered down in the Airport and Chilled.

Kellie was so excited to see her boy that she was about to jump out of her skin, the time came and nerves were all over the place.    People we departing the same flight, and all she could say was where is he over and over again.

Like the  old sayin goes a watched pot never boils, so in due time there he was, and emotion flowed in the Air Port.   A lot of time and planning went into this, not to mention it was the first time Joe has ever flown anywhere in his 13 year old life.   Oh by the way  it was not only his first time flying but he was also SOLO… He did great and is quite the awesome young man.

As we left the Air Port, the rain that was coming down when we went into the Air Port, had now turned to Snow, that’s right SNOW “GREAT”  We headed back towards North Carolina and the closer we got the snow turned back to rain.

One of the best yard displays I have ever seen in my life..

One of the best yard displays I have ever seen in my life..

As we appproached  Kill Devil Hills we stopped by a Christmas display in just a regular guys yard.  This guy goes nuts each year and has been on the local news on several occasions, its right at the end of Ocean Acres Blvd, All the way at the end, I highly recommend this as a must see if your down for the holidays.  You know its good if I’ll stop and see it even after spending 12 hours in a car Adventure to Newport New Int. Air Port.

The run through Rodanthe (the only part of the trip that concerned me) was rough 50 plus mph wind and Sand Blastin over Hwy 12, it was a rough go but we went slow and made it home safe at around 1 a.m.  Kellie was a real trooper as she drove the final stretch through all the wind and sand..

We settled in and went X-Mass Shopping and spent the next couple of days in extreme excitement for good old Santa to come pay us a visit.

Christmas Morning came and the boat load of presents awaited all of us.  Joe is into magic and card tricks so his Mom hooked him up with a Magical card deck and 3 dvd’s of tricks.  He is very entertaining and performs the tricks very very well.

Kellie got me an Ipod shuffle and I have been loading it with all the music that I love.  All the old stuff that I use to have on cassettes are now crammed onto a device the size of a half of a cigarette.. It has awesome sound, and I can’t wait to go on trout walks with it.  Also can’t wait to use it in the yak, rockin out , catchin TROUT…

It has been a Great Trip, and I have enjoyed Joe’s company.  We have bonded and I can’t wait to hang out with him all summer long.  We are not looking forward to him leaving, and I am sure that it will be a very sad moment in time.

Well The New Year is approaching us at lightning speed, I am kinda sad to see this year go.  I had a hell of a year, in all aspects of the Game.  From Fishing, spring, summer and fall treated me very very well, to Kellie, this has been one of the best years of my life , and I Hope it was for all who are reading this.  May all your Dreams Come true, hang in there and NEVER SURENDER … A Happy and Prosperous New Year To All of you from all of Us….

Confused Sea's have been the problem, swell on this day was comming from both directions. Not good for trout fishing..

The past couple of weeks,  to be exact, we just can’t get a break.  Every couple of days a new front comes through, one from the south and then one from the north.  The Ocean just can’t get un-confused,  and such, fishing has been horrible, worst that I have seen, since moving here.  But there is always an adventure to be had on the Outer Banks.

No end in sight either as a new southerly front will get us tonight into tomorrow.  35 plus out of the southeast, it will sure change the beach structure, which in my opinion needs it.  Not a lot of structure to fish, not many bars and breaks.  I have been fishing (taking my trout rod for a walk) from Hatteras Village to South of Avon with very little to show for it.  2 throw back flounders and 2 small keeper trout.

Finding lots of cool stuff in all the debris from the storms, found this old ship plank washed up north of Buxton yesterday.  No metal on it as it looks to be old wood dowl

Very very Old

Very very Old

construction, very old non the less.  Ocean is still Pissed and there is no end in sight.  Good news is that there are trout being caught in places that they should have been catching over a month ago, so there is still hope.

It’s all good the 4 mile walk in the sand in waders each day is keeping me in decent shape, for now.  So far it has been very disapointing but thats why they cal it fishing…..

Into it this year, last year I canceled Christmas, just was not into it. This year it's back on and I am in the Spirt of it all... So have a Merry...

Dec.1st Hatteras Snow

Dec.1st Hatteras Snow

The Title says it all, this can go down as the November that wasn’t.  Fishing has been in a word, Pathetic.  For the hole month of November I have caught 2 Specks, and 2 Flounders.  At this point I say bring on March and the Kayak.  After having an Unreal Zen-Like Spring/Summer, Fall has humbled me.  I am about to say that it is just not going to happen this year on the Specks in the Ocean, but it is a little early for calling it quits.

Just liked how it looked ..

Just liked how it looked ..

With the lack of fishing myself and Kellie have been doing lots of exploring, walking the rach lines all over Buxton and Avon.  Yesterday we went from Behind the Motels all the way to Ramp 38, bout 2 Miles each way, without so much as a bump.  But what we did find was amazing, 12 pieces of Sea Glass, of all different shapes and sizes.  For those of you that don’t know Kellie is an Artisan.  Here is a link to her web site, she does all hand made custom stuff.  In one of the picture on her site you can see Pumpkin Boys Drum Stone Ear rings, that were an anniversary present to his lovely wife Athena.  http://beachfishergirl.com/default.aspx

With each step that we took we were like little kids on an Easter egg hunt.  Kellie started it off with the largest piece that we found, a big Green one, and then folks it was on.  We kept finding the stuff, I asked her if she had ever found Sea Glass, the way we were and she replied it was her best day ever.

It was a Hell of an Adventure, not only did we find all that glass, but I found another Liquor Bottle that dates some where between 1933 and 1954.  So with no fishing going on we just kept beach combing for hours, it was a fantastic day off.
