This is channel Marker #8, it is way the HELL out there, bout 3 or 4 miles from launch point.. It ain't no Joke .. Not for the Faint Hearted..

All I can say is holy Sh!t.. A lot further than I expected.. Took about 2 hours to get there but I got there.  As soon as I got settled in and Dropped anchor the wind (which by the way was not forecasted) kicked up to about 20.. Hung around and fished the Reef for about an hour, and caught my first ever sound-side Spanish Mackerel.  Ended up with two in an hour, but because of deteriorating conditions I had to get out of Dodge..

The paddle back was a MF’er, I thought it was long on the way there but the way back took over 4 hours head into a 20 knt sw wind (that was not supposed to be there)  Thanks God I got my conditioning up before I tried this adventure because its about 7 or 8 miles round trip.. Now that doesn’t sound like much, but add a 20 knt head wind and 3 knts of current, and my friend you better eat your Wheaties if ya want to try that paddle.  It is not for un-conditioned folks.. If I were not a strong paddler I would have ended up in Englehart on the other side of the sound.. Again DO NOT TRY THIS unless you got some time in the water..Until next time JAM out

Had a good couple of days on the water.. OBX-TACO was back from Fla.  with the plan to catch some fish.  Left out of

Obx-Taco with a Lighthouse view..

Buxton  after work for a fabulous day on the water, to bad the fish didn’t cooperate, they had lock jaw as Rich got a Skunko and I got a small Speck and a Small throw back flounder..

The next day he was doing a beach day so I went solo.  Not much going on caught a Blue a Flounder a Speck and the Critter that Killed Steve Irwin.

Uncle Ray Ray

Uncle Ray Ray

Uncle Ray Ray we like to call him.. Its best not to   F with Uncle Ray Ray, I’ve seen too many people get real messed up by these critters.  The best way to  handle them is to not handle them.. I have caught them up to 90 pounds on my trout rod, they will pull you all over the place while on the Kayak.

Do Not mess with Uncle Ray Ray, he will ruin your day.

Do Not mess with Uncle Ray Ray, he will ruin your day.

I jettison my anchor and let him take me anywhere he wants till he’s tired, then ya try to surface him and break him off @ the Leader.. Thats exactly what I did.. Here are the shots..

Headin to the REEF today with Travis a good friend og mine Troy from Ga. Son.. Getting ready to meet him in a few minutes, will have pictures and a report later.. Until then ..

2 pounder Fun little fella..

2 pounder Fun little fella..

Still catchin on a  regular basis, nice quality fish around 2 pounds.. Went out afterwork yesterday and got 6 within 2 hours.  Waiting on a Marine GPS unit to come, getting a Garmin Hand Held that I am gonna mount to the Kayak on a RAM ball mount system.. The thought process is if I have that as well as my compass then I can go farther.. Did about 5 miles with Flea the other day.. So I am pretty much ready for anything.. To the Reef and back is about 5 miles then ya add in paddling around.. Stamina is there and I am ready..

A view from work this morning,  not a bad view at all..

Specks Flounder a Blue Fish and a MARSH MARLIN

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

SandFlea and myself hit it pretty early this morning, bout 6:30 or so.  We paddled out to a spot where I smoked them yesterday morning and preceded to toss lures.  Nothing, so we move North a piece.  Nothing so we move North a piece yet again.  Nothing.

Open Water Paddle

Open Water Paddle

At this point I had already been thinking about a spot that I charted out on Google Earth the day before.  I was unsure of its exact location, but I had a general idea where it was. It is more of an Open Sound Paddle then in the Canadian Hole Area wide open with no Islands, just open water.   If we hit the Scooby Doo Mansion we have gone too far.  Actually its not the Scooby Doo Mansion, its the old Pilot House Restaurant that has been closed for a number of years.  But it looks like the Scooby Doo Mansion don’t it??

Scooby Doo Mansion

Scooby Doo Mansion

Kept looking for the canal I was supposed to take to get to the new hole and never saw it. I’ll  have to get back on Google Earth and look a little closer.  Its about a Mile and a half to  where we were at and the Current and the Tide was pushing us back where we wanted to be..

We were just drifting along BSing and fishing when Flea was telling me about Pelicans and how he’d like to get a closeup of the one on a white pole in the middle of the sound, that we saw.  So that area shall be known from hence forth as Pelican Point.

It was right around then that Flea asked me if I had ever caught a Gar back in the sound, my reply was yes around 36 inches or so.  Real fun on a Trout Rod.  He replied how he would love to catch one… A Gar has a long Bill like a Marlin, cept the Gar’s Bill is lined with Razor Sharpe Teeth.   So a lot of folks down here call them Marsh Marlin’s.  They are not very common and seeing them is not an everyday occurrence.. So we paddle along BSing and fishing  to the next spot.. Not giving it much thought that we would ever see one today.

I get a Speck off the get go right @ keeper size, but I don’t feel like messing with him and I let him go.  Got another one next cast a little bigger let him live as well.

Decided to move down current to Water Moccasin Island to stand, walk around and fish a little.. When all of the sudden I hear SandFleas Drag on his reel start screaming, I reel my stuff in and say “I’ll grab the Camera”  , at this point we don’t even know what he’s got when it jumps out of the water Tail Walkin like a Marlin.  It was cool I’m snapping shots, Fleas got the rod and fish under control and Bam, Flea nails bout a 36 inch or so Marsh Marlin or GarFish.. Check out this suckers teeth..

Fleas Gar was an Awesome sight to see.  Ya see Fishing ain’t always about you catching fish, its about sharing with others, what other folk have shared with you.. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!     Until next time JAM out

7 Specks a Flounder and a FLUNDER before 9:30 am What did you do this Morning

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Got to the spot and seen a gentleman in a Sit INSIDE KAYAK or what I like to refer to as a DIEINSIDE,  there are places in the sound that get pretty deep and there is no where for you to bail your DIE INSIDE kayak, when on rivers and streams you just pull off to the side and dump the water out, in the sound you do not  have that opportunity.. If that happens, you have one of two choices 1.  Swim 2. Drown..Both those choices suck in my book.. Right tool right Job Sit On Tops only thing that should be used in the Ocean or Sound JMHO..

Anyway gut told me he caught nothing, I smiled and put Yak in the water.   Bait was every where jumping mullet were all around you can see them tailing in the pic below..

Sand Flea and Orange Blossom Lee

Sand Flea and Orange Blossom Lee

Launched with a couple of good friends, SandFlea  and Orange Blossom LEE.. We took off around 2 or so and headed North dead into a 20 mph NE wind.. Here on the Island when ever ya have wind ya have gusts, so if she’s blowin 20 expect a 30 puff  or two.. She was a good go to the North and we made it to all our destinations, and we all got a good workout.   It was White Capping a bit with waves coming over the bow.  But today’s Ocean Kayaks  commonly referred to as Sit On Tops handle the big stuff well. There not a lot of  Drag and they have Rocker, like a Surf Board.  They actually are a modified Surf Board.  I’ve stripped mine down and took it Wave Riding on many occasions and the size of the stuff you can get into is amazing.. Been on well overhead waves an she has handled it well.

As the day progressed the wind slacked off and conditions Improved immensely, OBLEE caught the first one a nice little Speck  right  @ about 12 inches.  We fished  there for a piece and nothing else was caught there.  We moved to the other side and Flea caught his first Speck ever in the Sound.  Me and him have Mo-hawked them in the Ocean from the Beach in the Winter, but that’s another type of fishing..

Let me Introduce you to my little friend

Let me Introduce you to my little friend

At this point we have been @ it a while and yours truly has yet to get a nibble, and I’m thinking to myself   “I hope I am not coming down with a case of Robitis.” So I switch things up a bit and take off my grub and jig head and put on a Berkley Dancin Blade, never used it before so I set up to drift fish with it.  Get way up current, plan my angle and start my first drift right along side a sand bar, holding the rod in my hand and letting the wind and the current push me along.. Didn’t take long and I nailed this nice little 2 pound er..

It was getting late and a little chilly so we called it a day.. No one was skunked, but we sure did not set the world on fire either.  But a big part of the Yakin experience is, where you are and who you are with..
